Spain Day 5 Part I - Toledo

After spending 3 nights in Madrid, it is time to move on again. We were half way through our journey & now making our way back to Barcelona.
We were asked by the tour manager, if we would like to include a brief tour of Toledo at our own expense & I am so glad we did. Toledo was also declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco for it's extensive monumental & cultural heritage. And walking through it's streets, among the medieval architecture, makes one feel like having stepped back into the middle ages.
Magnificent skyline of ToledoA rare pic (top right) with the guys - Shaun, Jason & LinusI was completely besotted by our Toledo tour guide, Angel (pronounced: Ang-hill).
1st stop was a sword factory. Toledo has been famous for its hand-crafted swords since medieval times and still supplies film-makers, television producers and collectors worldwide with weaponry, suits of armour, metal gloves and scabbards. Yep ...... those weapons you see in 'Lord of the Rings' was supplied by them. The other craft that it is famous for is the finely made gold jewellery boxes, plates and jewellery. This pic shows a master putting the gold thread on his craft.
There were so many different kind of swords (& guns too)! We had an awesome time enacting fighting scenes & at the same time satisfying our cam whoring urge :pI totally love this pic! Amy's expression was priceless!
Next stop was at the Cathedral of Toledo. It was initially a mosque & then later converted into a Christian cathedral, without hardly making changes to the structure (hence the Mudéjar style). A pity no photography was allowed inside though.
Other than architecture, I've also managed to learn a wee bit about art history during this trip. 2 of the world's top 5 paintings is in Spain. And I am privileged to see 1 of it. (The original of course!) The Burial of Count Orgaz in the Church of Santo Tomé by EL GRECO, a painter, sculptor & architect of the Spanish Renaissance.

An important characteristic of his paintings was the elongation of human bodies. The bodies painted by him were long & thin.

If you have a chance to see this painting, there's a couple of interesting things to note: a) Clearly divided into 2 sections - heavenly above & terrestrial below. You debate whether he's successfully united the 2 zones or whether instead he had created a barrier between heaven & earth ☺ b) He's portraying an event in 1323 but the men who attended the burial were garbed in contemporary 16th-century costume. c) His self-portrait - the only one whose face is looking directly at you. d) His son, Jorge Manuel - the young page boy on the left, also looking directly at you. e) His signature appears on the handkerchief in the pocket of the young boy followed by the date '1578', the year of his son's birth, but not the date of the painting (1586).Another famous painting, El Expolio (The Disrobing of Christ), of El Greco is housed in the Sacristy of the Cathedral. Again controversial points: a) Christ was placed at lower level than some of the onlookers. b) The 3 Marys at the left forground - they were not mentioned to be present at this point in the Gospels. c) Soldier wearing a 16th century suit of armour.Since we're on the topic of art, I might as well add this in: Las Meninas (The Maids of Honour) by VELAZQUEZ. This is the other top painting found in Spain. I only saw the replica because I was too cheapo to pay the entrance fee to El Prado Museum :p

Spain Day 4 - Madrid

Now's the time for Real Madrid fans to envy me because right here is their home ground.
Some of my colleagues went into the stadium while I opted out since I am not too wild about soccer. But they've managed to take some really awesome photos inside & I kinda regretted it :p
"Real Madrid's sounvenior shop" aka Addidas
I had missed breakfast cos took too long with my make-up (what's new?). Hence while the rest went to the stadium or shopping, I nipped into a cafe to have pizza! It doesn't look very appetizing but once again, I can tell you that it's finger-licking good! How I wish I can have a taste of it again.
It's CHINESE for lunch again. 80% of our meals were Chinese food which was so god-awful disappointing :(
Dallas & I couldn't resist the Pastry Shop opposite the Chinese Restaurant, so we decided to help ourselves to some dessert!
Now a tour of Plaza Mayor - the scene of many events such as market, bullfights, soccer games & even public executions!
You can't see very clearly from here but Plaza Mayor has a beautiful painted facade.
Now I see for myself that birds do indeed fly in a V-shape! Haha ......... suaku (mountain-tortoise)!!!
Say what you like about my Uggs but I love them to bits!Plaza Mayor has a ring of old, traditional shops & cafes surrounding it. And through the many glass windows, here is a pic of my favourite food - Pulpo (octopus)!!!
What a sense of humour :D
While the rest were busy souvenior hunting & even though it's dinner time soon, the lure of Tapas was simple too great. I just had to go into one of the cafes to eat my favourite mussels & pulpo. *lick chops*But we were so overcharged! This plate of pulpo costs S$30! What to do ........ I'm such a sucker for Tapas.
To round off the day, we had dinner in the Musuem of Ham (yeah ...... you heard me right :p) Yep. It's all ham that you see hanging here.
Despite the Tapas, I was still so looking forward to dinner! (Can you imagine the amount of weight I'd piled on!)
You'd think we were having ham for dinner because afterall we were in the Musuem of Ham .......... but NO! We had that lump of pasta for appetizer, then Fish & Chips (minus the chips) for main course! That was such a crime!!! *cries blue murder*Happily posing prior to the arrival of the main courseYou should have seen our faces after that :p
Thereafter, the gang went clubbing (failed attempt :p) but I begged to be let off & went back to the hotel instead because I was having such a bad headache.

Spain Day 3 - Madrid & Segovia

On day 3 while we were on our way out, 1 of my colleague was in severe pain & had to be brought to the hospital immediately. There she needed a surgery. It was so awful but I am so glad that everything went well & she's all ok now. It taught me the importance of travel insurance. So peeps, don't ever forget it when you travel!
Arrived in Segovia - a UNESCO World Heritage Site
This is a 2000 year old Roman Aqueduct that cuts through the centre of the town & it's image has served as the mint mark on all coins produced in Segovia for over 400 years.
Dear Amy who sits right next to me in the office
Dae, whose mother-in-law & Aunty Mary are good friends (small world).I wished I had been able to spend more time to absorb the sights & sounds of this quaint old city :(

The Cathedral of Segovia is widely considered to be Europe's last great Gothic cathedral
Moving on to Alcazar of Segovia
Don't be mistaken, I was not in Disneyland. The Alcazar castle was the source of inspiration for Snow White's castle in Disneyland Paris.
More of Diana & me
Breathtaking sights
Queen Isabelle I of Castile was crowned here as Queen of Castile & Leon. She also married King Fernando II here.
Alcazar started off as an Arab fort & it is evident on the walls of the interior
It also functioned as an artillery school from 1762 for almost a hundred years.
You have tried the Chinese suckling pig? Now try the Spanish version. It is a Segovian specialty known as Cochinillo. To show that the pigs are tender, they cut them with plates & then smash the plates on the floor, right in front of you. Hee ....... I must say that it's not quite suited to our palate :pWe went to Palacio Real (Royal Palace - official residence of the King of Spain) but it's closed to public because the President of Russia was there for a visit.
Our last stop of the day was at Plaza de Toros - Madrid Bullring. I was told that bullfighting was so much a part of the Spanish's life that each city has a bullfight ring.
We were severely cautioned never to take the metro for fear of pickpocketsLook closely to see which appendage I am pointing at :p
I hoped they didn't break their back from trying to lift me!
P.S. I apologise, not too wordy today because it's 2am now & I'm dying to crawl into bed! :p
