Cheers to a magnificent 2012!

To me, the end of 2011 is not simply just the end of yet another year, it signifies the closure of an important chapter in my life.

By starting off the 1st morning of 2012 jogging/walking in East Coast Park, it had given me a chance to be alone to ponder and reflect upon the last year. 2011 was rough. Admittedly I'd had worse but I wouldn't want to revisit that again. Nevertheless, in spite of all the unpleasantness that had happened, I believe I came out of it stronger. I'd learned a huge life lesson & I learned it well. I'm now not only grateful for the good things in life but the bad as well. Without the bad, I wouldn't come out of life wiser. Without the bad, I wouldn't know how good I had it in life.

Seeing some of my loved ones in ending up in the ICU last year, made me realise that nothing else matters except for one's health. I'm very thankful just for the simple fact that the ones I love are in good health. As we end the year & start anew, I want to give thanks to some very important people without whom, my life journey would be arduous:

Thanks to my (ex-)colleagues - Ahmad, Grace, Jennifer, Lionel, Sal, Serina, Sherry, Trisha & Yain Ping. Thank you for your friendship & accepting me as who I am. I'm going to miss working side by side with all of you :(

Thanks to my bosom buddies (pun not intended :p) - Dionne, Joe, Joey, Juliana, Marilyn & Nelly. Thank you for your unwavering faith and unyielding loyalty. I couldn't ask for better friends.

Thanks to my family - Mum, Dad, Uniz, Rene, Leto, Erykca & Ken. Thank you for your unconditional love & for putting up with my antics. I love you guys so much!

Thanks to my 2 precious - Megan & Pillow. Thank you, one for driving me round the bend & the other for keeping my sanity intact (guess who's who? :p) Haha …… but on a serious note, dear Meg, thanks for giving me a reason to open my eyes every morning.

I had the opportunity to spend some time with Meg recently & so I decided to add one more category to my blog - 'Family Activities'. It might come in useful to those who're scratching their heads on where to bring the family to for some fun.

So where did we go for our family fun?

A word of caution. The ride lasts for approximately 30mins but 10mins into the ride, and you'll be wondering how to keep yourself occupied other than cam-whoring.

Check this out! This was taken in 2008 on Ken's birthday. I'd purposely chosen to wear the same top so that I can make a comparison. On hindsight, I probably shouldn't cos it only serves to emphasize how much I'd aged & ballooned! Mixed emotions surfaced while reading the old post. Sadly, what's gone will never come back.

I am pleased to announce that this is the last of my USA post! Woot! Blogged from April till December. Gosh ……. that took me more than half a year to churn this out :p Thanks for tahaning (bearing) with me people :)

I swear I never had that much Chinese food in my entire life as compared to those past few days in USA

We simply can't resist even though food was coming out through our noses. We're only human afterall.

I don't understand why their pizzas tastes so much yummier. Seeing that it was our last night, we just had to have one last pizza. Don't ask me how we managed to stuff everything in.

After all those food the night before, the first thing that we did when we woke up was to eat again. Looking back, it's no wonder I look like I do now. Sigh ……..

Getting ready for our long haul flight back, hence the bare faces. I'll let you in on a secret. I have perfect eyesight :p Sssshhhh…..

Guess what we did when we reached the airport? EAT AGAIN! Overdosed on Chinese food & thus we were over the moon to see a Japanese restaurant. I can't get enough of the Bud Light, so one last bottle before I say my goodbye.

Transited in Korea's Incheon International Airport. Joe & I had been talking about Korea's authentic kimchi for the longest time. We had less than an hour to spare & so while the rest made a dash to the duty free shops, Joe & I made a beeline for the restaurant.

Haha ….. but guess what? I managed to gobble everything down in record time & even found time to grab some facial masks! *happiness*

Came home to the warmest welcome from Meg. I feel so loved!

Blogging about the USA trip is bittersweet. What fond memories they are. I'm sure going to miss ~~everyone~~ some of the awesome folks in Pfizer. Well, it was fun while it lasted but I guess it's time to move on.

Shabuya shabu-shabu is located right next to Tajiyama Yakiniku, and part of the restaurant chain. After trying out the Japanese charcoal grill last week, we decided to go for shabu-shabu this time around.

We ordered the dinner set priced at $68 for 2 (came up to almost $100 after drinks & taxes) which consists of salad, sashimi, rice/udon, Wagyu beef, pork collar, chicken, fish paste, vegetable platter, & dessert. After the fantastic Yakiniku experience, I left a little disappointed. There's really nothing to rave about & the soup base is a tad bit bland. My biggest grouse however, is the benches. It's so far from the table that I left the restaurant with a backache :p

Verdict: I'd suggest you put your money in Tajiyama instead.

The boat with no oars - part II

The previous post must have seemed inexplicably bizarre to most. Erykca asked me where I plagiarized the passage from. *rolls eyes* It's all me by the way :p.

The past few days had been one hell of an emotional roller-coaster ride - feeling high & low all at the same time. This mixture of emotions was a weird sensation. Really exhilarated but yet can't help feeling that lingering sourish sensation at the pit of my stomach (which I'm pretty sure it's not gastric reflux).

Be it those directly affected or those indirectly affected, I believe everyone grew up (or is 'sober up', more apt?) a little from the experience.

I'm feeling calmer now as the dust settles. I hope this is so for the rest too. You know when they say 'when one door closes, the other opens' & that 'everything happens for a reason'? As cliché as it sounds, I'm a 100% believer. 船到桥头自然直. Life works in mysterious ways, have faith & everything will fall into the right place.

The world in front of us is full of endless possibilities. Watch me shine.

The boat with no oars

I was floating on a boat with no oars, allowing the current to carry me wherever it wants. I was initially contented cos I had food to fill my stomach & blanket to keep me warm. But I started to yearn for dry land. And the day came when I finally spotted an island. I happily jumped off the boat but was soon filled with trepidation. I had no inkling what lies beyond. Is it full of wild animals waiting to devour me or is it a whole new wonderful world? I looked back & saw my boat drifting away - the boat carrying food & my security blanket. My first impulse was to run back to it but I forced myself to walk on cos I'd no desire to be adrift anymore.

Do you guys remember this book? True Singapore Ghost Stories by Russell Lee. Courtesy of Meg, I'm hooked on it again. Apparently it's popularity hasn't waned after all these years. Ahhh ...... Memories .....

I was reading Book 18 last night & there was this paragraph that jumped up at me from this story entitled 'Glimpse of Hell':

"If you lie and abuse your authority to harm someone, your stomach will be cut open and all the intestines will be pulled out for dogs to eat."

I believe in heaven & hell. I believe in Karma. So all I need to do is to patiently sit, wait & watch. *grins*

The limo might as well have been parked in the car park cos we were so pre-occupied with taking pics of ourselves that we'd completely neglected the spectacular Vegas Strip. The only few outdoor shots I got.

I absolutely love love love Vegas!

But our high life doesn't end there of course. The limo chauffeur was awfully nice & brought us to the largest gentleman club (aka strip club lah) in Vegas. Eat your hearts out guys! I even managed to sneak a pole-dancing video but too bad, this is a PG-rated blog. A whole bunch of girls to a gentleman club was quite something else. Nothing sleazy & nobody harassed us. Just good clean fun!

Though we might be ~~girls~~ ladies, but we definitely admire another pretty face or gorgeous body. Not the lascivious guys kinda way :p Besides the girls there were really friendly. Managed to chat to some & they even coolly offered me lap dances!

And did I forget to mention the toilet? I'm in love. With the toilet. It's stocked with all kinds of scents & lotions imaginable, plus mints & chocolates too! Of course, it's meant for the girls working there but it doesn't stop us from trying out the stuffs! :p

Hands down. All of us agreed that that was our best night throughout the entire trip.

The only pic that would pass censorship while in the club. We had pizza delivery! The biggest & most delicious pizza I ever had in my entire life (totally swear by it) :)

It was children's day & the parents support group put up a skit for the kids. The best part was that I got to play the student! I can't believe that after almost 25 years, I got to put on my primary school uniform again. I was so psyched! It's not my old uniform, of course. I was a real scrawny one back then. Sigh …… how did I turn out this way now ……. Anyway it was a good thing that I managed to find one that fits me. I like to think that there's still hope for me :p

Happy Teachers' Day!

Hmmm …… Blogger has a brand new interface. I can't decide yet whether I like it or hate it. For starters, it allows one to upload multiple photos at one go & it allows me to choose the size of my photos. So you'd have noticed an obvious change - you can see my face clearly now! Hahaha …… I chose XL size, of course. My most sincere apologies if being too up close is giving you nightmares :p

I'd just joined the Parent Support Group (PSG) from Meg's school recently. Kind of a late start considering that Meg is already in Primary 4 but like they always say, better late than never. I must say that I'm totally impressed with the support that Haig Girls' School (my alma mater) had given PSG. We have a nice big air-conditioned room & very much involved in the activities that the school organises. I learnt that not many schools appreciate this high level of participation from the parents. Seeing the close support & relationship between the school & the parents makes me feel more reassured than ever that Meg's in the right school.

One such collaboration was the Teachers' Day celebration. I learnt that every year the PSG will make handicrafts as presents for the teachers & even perform for them! I think it's really great that we get to show our appreciation. And so this year, I was involved in the performance which was soooo exciting! The performer in me was yelling to get out :p

In view of Hari Raya, we decided on a Malay dance

It only took us slightly over an hour to conceptualize & memorize the steps. We totally rock it!

Stop blaming us

It's absurd that TCB's voters are blaming TJS & even his voters. TJS had managed to garner 1/4 of Singaporeans' votes in a short span of 9 days. 529,732 (25.4%) is a sizeable number & it's unreasonable to demand that all of us switched sides.

I had thought about swinging my vote to the one that's more popular too. But you saw for yourself, the difference between TCB's & TJS's votes was a mere 9.81%. Online polls & rally showed TJS leading but yet on the ground was another story. None of us had an inkling on how the votes would swing.

And so I decided to go with my candidate of choice. I didn't choose TJS only for the sake of choosing an opposition, nor was I daft enough to be lured by his 'promises' without knowing what our constitution calls for. I read whatever I can lay hands on & watched every interview just so to be sure. I believed in what TJS stood for, just as you all had believed in what TCB stood for. I stand by my vote even though the result is as such. I did what I thought was best. Respect my vote as I had yours.

Both you & I had started out with the same vision & we had a common enemy. So why the finger pointing now? If you really must find someone to blame, blame the 37k who can't make up their mind & blame the 35.19% who were too short-sighted to see.

Tougher days ahead are looming & now is not the time to be divided.

Meg & I were invited by the very kind people from T/PR & Disney Channel to watch the premiere of 'Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension' in Shaw's Premiere Hall.

The experience of watching the movie in reclining deluxe leather seats snuggled up in blankets & each with a big bowl of popcorn in our hands was totally fantabulous. Not to mention the joy of each receiving a huge goody bag, thrilled us to bits! But perks strictly aside, Meg & I both were thoroughly entertained by the movie. It's hardly surprising to me that we'd enjoy it because Phineas and Ferb is one of the few cartoon that Meg watches nowadays & one of the few that I personally take delight in.

So make sure you & your kiddos don't miss it this coming Saturday, 27 August 2011, at 7.30pm on Disney Channel!

I took on my 1st photography assignment with Lil' Sweethearts. The sky was threatening to rain (and it did!) on the day of the shoot & thus I didn't have too much time to think through or compose. There's definitely room for improvement but still, I must admit that I'm awfully proud of myself!

However, it definitely helps to have a pro for a model. Meet Marissa. She's 7 & absolutely gorgeous. When I asked for her help, she took it seriously & practiced plenty at home plus making sure that she doesn't run around too much on the day of the shoot, so that she doesn't perspire. Mel, you did such a wonderful job with her!

Election is over & regardless of the result, life goes on. However I do want to thank friends who had taken the effort to read my previous post & even more so for those who helped share it, as well as 'like' it. I'm not sure if my post made a difference but I would like to think that it did.

Although my only attempt at writing a 'political' post seems fairly well received, I think I should just go back to writing what I'm really good at (haha ….. it doesn't matter what you think, at least I think I'm good :p). And so here we are, back to my incentive trip to USA.

An appeal from a mother to all Singaporeans

Meg's exams got postponed due to to the upcoming GE & so I took the opportunity to explain it to her. Barely halfway through, came her standard response: "don't know, don't care." Undaunted, I told her to imagine if our government was made up of a majority of dog haters & they decided to ban all dogs just like they did chewing gum. Not the best of analogy but it freaked her out enough to sit up & listen to me explain why it's pertinent to have alternative voices in parliament.

I took pains to explain to her cos I didn't want her to be apathetic like I was before. I voted our ruling party into parliament during the 2006 GE & am therefore repenting now by writing this blog post.

I had to sell the matrimonial flat after my divorce & thus shifted in temporarily with my parents while looking for a new home. I sold my flat at $8k COV but in a short span of time, the prices sky-rocketed & I'm now looking at flats with COV of $40k-$50k. Bearing in mind that other than the inflated flat pricing, I had to split the "profit" from the sale of my previous flat with my ex-husband. I am officially screwed! What's all that talk about assets enhancement?! You sell your house, you still have to buy another, isn't it? Such irony that I had always prided myself on being a higher than average wage earner & having close to $200k sitting in my CPF, I'm now homeless.

So here I am, a 35 years old single mum with a 10 years old kid in tow still staying with parents & struggling to save enough for a roof to call our own.

While grappling with the fact that I don't have enough savings for a house, I realised that I'm not going to have enough for Meg's tertiary education either. While we usually only think about how foreign talents are competing with us for our jobs, we didn't stop once to think that their kids might be competing for a place in the schools with our kids too. Just in Meg's class of 32 alone, there are 7 who are foreigners. It isn't hard to extrapolate in 10 years time, how competitive it will be to get into a local university. Whats more with the government wooing foreign students & offering them scholarships, the increasing ratio of foreign students versus local students is evident in the universities.

If there's 150 Singaporeans & only 100 places in the local universities but yet 50 places will be given up to the foreigners. Leaving only 50 places for the 150 Singaporeans to fight it out. Only the brightest will get in. But is that fair? What about the ones who are average. Do you give up on them then? Meg is an average student & the solution would be to send her to a university overseas. Problem is: I don't think I can afford it. And so she'll have to settle for a diploma & lose out on job opportunities as she'll be 'less educated' than her foreign counterpart. In this vicious cycle, the true blue children of Singapore will be relegated to the lowest rung in our country.

It's all a numbers game now. 'The Newpaper' today (5/5/2011) identified new citizens as one of the majority group of voters. I'm pretty sure you know whom they'll cast their votes for. So if we don't act now, by the next GE, we'll never be able to redeem ourselves. I'm probably going to get shoot down for this but I'm past caring whom I'm voting into the parliament just as long as it's an alternative voice. Without a substantial number of alternative voices in the parliament, all will be lost. I too once used to vote for stability & security (Which won't be affected anyway cos the ruling party will still be the ruling party. The chance of the opposition forming the majority is a big fat zero.) but what good is that if my child doesn't have a home & a future. I beseech all to think of the big picture. This GE is not about who will have the cleanest or the prettiest estate. It's about our children's future. We owe our children that.

I'm surprise that this movie was actually quite fun. Very unexpected from a movie of this genre. Very honestly, nothing spectacular about the plot but love it for the action sequences & its visual effects. Though not totally sure if it deserves the 4 out of 5 popcorns that I'm going to award but just so for the record, the extra half a popcorn was specially for Chris Hemsworth. That man was 100% pure sex walking on legs! *drools* :p

Just got back from the west coast of USA & I had a most wonderful time indeed! Although I can't apply the same enthusiasm to my poor wallet :p Contrary to my previous experiences of visiting a western country, this was a really pleasant one. Never once was I made to feel inferior because of my colour & everyone was so friendly that I didn't quite know how to react. Furthermore, with good pals like Joe & Dionne around, nothing can get me down.

In transit at Narita Airport & the 1st thing we rushed for was ramen! The restaurant didn't have it but we didn't really care what we ate just as long as it's authentic Japanese food. So we happily settled for udon instead.

And of course, a souvenior to bring along

After almost 20 hours of no shower & minimum toilet usage time, I think I look fairly decent

Just got back from a holiday from the US but before I can post up pics from the trip, I just had to post these 1st. Its been sitting around in my Picnik folder for the longest time.

Other than the last time, we all travelled to UK & Czech for Uniz's wedding. We very rarely had a chance to travel together as a family. This trip to Genting Highlands was one truly rare moment. A moment that I so cherish. Albeit it's just to our neighbouring country, it's a destination that serves all of us well. Dad gets his share of entertainment & we get ours, meeting each other at mealtimes only when necessary :p Hee …….

I'm so hoping that we can make it to visit Uniz end of this year. I'm in dire need of another holiday.

I can't believe that there are actually some near-strangers asking me to buy stuffs back for them during my upcoming trip to US. What nerve! I'm flabbergasted by how they have no qualms whatsoever about inconveniencing me.

Hell. Do I look like Singpost to you? It's my 1st holiday to USA for Pete's sake! Or even if it's to Malaysia, I shouldn't have to share my luggage space nor be burdened by someone else's shopping list.

But if you really must ask me to get it, then it will come at a price. Want the iPad2? Sure. That's another S$200 for courier & baggage space. Okay, I can hear you screaming: "You selfish, $$$-grabbing bitch!"

So? Bite me.

At this point which you must be thinking: "US only mah. Big deal. Don't buy don't buy lor, must write so much meh?"

Sure I do. This topic gripes at me as much as queue-cutting (but that's a story for another day). I'm the sort who'd rather pay for a cab than hitch a ride (unless offered). That's cos I don't want to feel indebted to the person. It's not easy to pay off 人情债. It might seem little initially but add it all up & it's a helluva payback. Likewise, I don't want anyone indebted to me either.

So unless you're family, my BFFs (whom I can count with my 5 fingers), or someone I'm indebted to, don't say I never did warn you. By writing this, I'm saving you the embarrassment of talking to my hand.

It's not as heart-wrenching as her previous titles such as 'My Sister's Keeper' or 'Change of Heart' nor is it as gripping (Meg's spelling word :p). But in usual Jodi Picoult style, it's highly thought-provoking & you're caught in a moral dilemma of GLBT issues. As much as I've always been pro-gay. It does make me ponder about issues that a child might potentially have with 2 same gender parents. However, it also made me realize that while I take my sexuality for granted, there are also those who have to work doubly hard just to be accepted for who they are. We were never on equal grounds.

I wished the book doesn't end quite as abruptly though. I kinda saw that twist coming in the end but still I wished that she had expounded on it. I also wondered what happened to 'Lucy'? Although Lucy is not a main character, it doesn't stop me from being curious about her story.

A good read as with most of Jodi Picoults' books and I'll give it 3 & a half stars out of 5.

We were here for Simon's farewell lunch last week. I'd never knew of its existence prior to that & was pleasantly surprised that such yummilicious Thai food is available in the heartlands. I just had to bring the family here again for dinner tonight! (Not the bestest of food pictures cos everyone was real hungry & didn't allow me more than 1 attempt on the pics :p) Totally value for $$$ but be warned of the long queue though.

There's little to say about this movie really. The plot is so thin that it's hardly worth mentioning. The Adjustment Bureau came highly recommended (69% on tomatometer) on Rotten Tomatoes but I left the cinema thinking to myself, "WTH?"

No doubt great chemistry between Matt Damon & Emily Blunt but the loopy storyline involving magic doors & hats (namely fedoras) just doesn't fly for me. I'm probably the worst of all die-hard romantics but I'm hardly convinced that I am able to zero in on my life partner after 5 mins into a conversation and definitely no one is going to ride the same bus for 3 years just hoping to meet a stranger (2 chanced short meetings = stranger) again.

I'm sorry critics but this renders only a 2 out of 5 popcorns from me.

I just got back from watching 'I am number four' and since Mr. Sandman hasn't come to claim me yet, I thought I'd do a short (& I meant really short) review on it. Been ages since I did a movie review :p

The movie starts off really slow & it pretty much stayed slow almost all the way. Things only started picking up in the last 20 minutes. But to be fair, when the pace picked up, my eyes stayed glued to the screen. If only the entire show was as good as its last 20 minutes. I guess you can tell it was really quite a let-down.

What made the show bearable was the cute beagle and a delicious-looking Alex Pettyfer (self-explanatory). On the opposite end of the spectrum though, was Diana Agron (Sarah). She's such a pain to watch. She had only 1 expression throughout the movie and she was not pretty enough to distract me from her bad acting. Definitely a teen flick. Verdict? I give it 2 and a half popcorns out of 5.

Oh and it looks likely that there's a sequel looming in the near future. Will I watch it? Yes - only if they keep Alex Pettyfer :p

Crashed into a lorry last week when I was moving out of a parking lot. Instead of checking right, I checked left. I feel like banging my head against the wall after that! The lorry escaped unscathed but not so for my poor FD2. Just before new year too .......... super super sad :(
